Crafting healing medicines and food is an art and a science.
Infused Oils
Calendula Infused Oil
Take 2 cups of olive oil ad 1 cup of dried or wilted calendula flowers and put in a mason jar and let it sit in the window for 6 weeks. This process can be shortened by simmering the flowers on the lowest setting on the stove for 2 hours. Strain out the flowers and but the infused oil in a cool dark place. Use it in making herbal medicines, soaps, and bath products.
St. Johns Wort Infused Oil
St. Johns oil is an excellent topical oil for inflamed muscles or ligaments and can be used for sore backs and pulled muscles and ligaments. The oil can also be applied after a sunburn in order to reduce the pain and heal the skin quickly. Do not apply before going out in the sun.
In a clear glass container place cup of dried or 1 cup fresh St. Johns wort flowers and 3 cups of plain olive oil. Place the flowers in the jar and cover the flowers with oil; make sure the oil covers the flowers, cover and place in the sun. Let the mixture sit in the sun for 6 weeks, shaking it daily. After 6 weeks strain out the flowers and add the contents of a vitamin E capsule to preserve the infused oil. St. Johns wort oil should be red in color.
Arnica Infused Oil
Arnica oil can be used as a topical for bruises and minor scrapes and cuts. It releieves pain and inflammation associated with these issues.
In a clear glass container place cup of dried or 1 cup fresh Arnica flowers and 3 cups of plain olive oil. Place the flowers in the jar and cover the flowers with oil; cover and place in the sun. Let the mixture sit in the sun for 6 weeks, shaking it daily. After 6 weeks strain out the flowers and add the contents of a vitamin E capsule to preserve the infused oil.
Many oils can be infused; some of my favorite infusions include oak moss, frankincense, and myrrh. Most resin based infused oils need to melted on a stove at the lowest setting
