There are many ways to collect water and conserve resources. I personally have 4 rainbarrels set up around my house to collect rainwater. As the water tables decrease the search for drinkable water becomes harder. Another reson is that the quality of natural water sources is decreasing due mostly to pollution. Wild lakes in upstate New York, USA have been found to have all female fish. When the water was tested there was a large amount of female hormones and anti-depressants in the water. Also if you live on city water the water is cleaned and reused/or purified with toxic chemicals in order to make it drinkable. With a simple home water filtration system (I recommend Berkley water filters) you could use your rainbarrel water not only to water the garden but to drink.
